Child Find – Free Developmental and Special Education Screenings
Is Your Child Experiencing Developmental or Learning Challenges?
The La Conner School District provides Child Find, a free service to identify children who may have developmental concerns or disabilities. Early identification allows families and schools to provide the right supports to help every child thrive.
Signs to Look For:
You may consider a screening if your child:
Has difficulty hearing or seeing
Has trouble communicating with people outside the family
Struggles to keep up with other children their age
Faces challenges learning, especially when experiencing social-emotional difficulties
Shows delays in physical, cognitive, or self-help skills
Who Can Be Screened:
Birth to age 5: Free developmental screenings through La Conner School District.
Birth to age 3: Services provided through the Skagit Preschool and Resource Center (SPARC) via the state Department of Children, Youth, and Families.
School-age children (6–22): Screening for special education needs through the district.
All children living within La Conner School District boundaries are eligible. Families temporarily living in another district may contact the district where they are currently residing.
What Happens During a Screening:
Children participate in fun activities such as stacking blocks, cutting with scissors, drawing, counting, naming colors, and jumping.
A trained professional reviews the results with the family, provides suggestions, and may refer for further evaluation or schedule a recheck.
Screenings typically take about 45 minutes.
Legal Reference:
Under WAC 392-172A-02040, school districts must conduct Child Find activities to locate, evaluate, and identify students with suspected disabilities who may need special education and related services.
