La Conner School District has a New Mascot!! The La Conner School Board of Directors will formally acknowledge and recognize the Swinomish Artist, Jeanette Quintasket and our new Eagle Mascot, at the January 24 regular board meeting at 4:00 pm.
In the Spring of 2021, the state legislature passed HB #1356 enabling local Native American tribal governments final approval (and the right to disallow) the use of Native American names, symbols, or images as public school mascots, logos, or team names.
On July 6, 2021, the Swinomish Tribal Senate approved a resolution authorizing the use of the name Braves for the teams of the La Conner School District (LCSD). Through this process, LCSD was tasked with adopting a new mascot.
Next, in September 2021, Clarissa James, LCSD Community and Cultural Liaison, and Theresa James, Tribal ESA and senior class advisor began the process of finding a new mascot for La Conner School District, soliciting the help of secondary leadership students. Students created a survey of the values and images they wanted to be represented in a mascot. The survey was shared with students, parents, and staff for their input. Artists then used these values and images to develop a mascot. The district received thirty-eight art submissions for a new mascot! Community members, alumni, family members, students, and staff had the opportunity to vote for their favorite artwork.
The La Conner School Board viewed the polling results at their regular board meeting on December 13, 2021. Wanting more student voice, the board asked for additional high school student feedback. The submission that received the most votes was selected as the school board’s recommendation to the Swinomish Tribal Senate. On December 16, 2021, the Swinomish Tribal Senate approved the eagle artwork submitted by Jeanette Quintasket. The eagle in the images below is now our official mascot.
