LA CONNER SCHOOL BOARD DIRECTOR CANDIDATE FILING WEEK MAY 15-19, 2023
The state legislature created local school districts to administer the educational mandate of the State Constitution and the statutes passed by the legislature. The La Conner School District has a locally elected Board of Directors whose members serve four-year terms. This five-person board is non-partisan. The Board members establish a program that complies with state law and the common school rules and regulations adopted by the Superintendent of Public Instruction and the State Board of Education.
A person may become a candidate for a place on the board by filing a declaration of candidacy with the county auditor during the May filing period, as prescribed by law. The filing week for candidates for La Conner Director District 1, 2, and 4 is May 15-19 for the November 2023 election. Interested candidates can file online, by mail, or in person. Additional information on filing for candidacy may be found at http://www.skagitcounty.net/ The La Conner School Board consists of five community members, one from each geographic region of the district.Qualifications: Candidates for the school board must be:
- Citizen of the United States of America
- A legal resident of Washington State
- At least 18 years old by election day
- Registered to vote within the La Conner School District attendance area
- Registered to vote within the district they wish to represent
Specific duties of the local Board of Directors include:
- Employing a school superintendent, principals, teachers, and other personnel.
- Establishing appropriate courses of study equal to or greater than required by the State Board of Education.
- Adopting a school budget.
- Determining local levies.
- Assessing teaching materials.
- Establishing local policies as appropriate.
The Superintendent of schools is selected by the Board of Directors to serve as its chief executive officer. It is the responsibility of the superintendent to recommend the appointment of all other personnel to the Board and to bring recommendations to the Board for action in carrying on the work of the District.
The La Conner School Board of Directors and the superintendent are constantly assessing the community's needs and aspirations to develop an educational program that is consistent with the District's resources. Community members are encouraged to communicate their ideas to the Board members and the superintendent.
Regular meetings of the Board are held at 5:00 P.M. on the fourth Monday of each month, except July, December, and May. The meetings are held in the Board of Directors room in the District Office building. Meeting agendas are available in the superintendent's office two days before each regular meeting and can also be found by clicking the Agenda page.
All regular and special board meetings are open to the public. All actions authorized or required by law are taken at open meetings. The Board may, however, meet in executive (closed) sessions to discuss dealing with personnel, property considerations, employee negotiations, or possible litigation.
Constituents of the La Conner School District who plan to comment on agenda items at board meetings are encouraged to contact the superintendent in advance. By using this process, the Board can be prepared to answer specific questions and have any requested information available.
